Many thanks to our runners Laura Mackley and Bob Phipps for raising over £1,500 in Brighton's first ever Marathon.

The conditions were tough with very warm weather and the sun beating down on the runners. It took 20 minutes for 7,650 runners to pass the start line in Preston Park and 7,000 runners had finished after 6 hours. Over 80,000 spectators lined the streets of Brighton and Hove encouraging and clapping the runners on their way. Hotel balconies were filled with people and there was even a flotilla of boats offshore.

Bob Phipps, Guild Care's Operations Director (Community Services) ran his first (and now possibly last!) marathon and achieved his goal of finishing in under 4 hours, with a great time of 3hrs 52 minutes. Bob stood in at the last minute and has raising over £580 to date. You can still sponsor him on Bob's Just Giving Page

Brighton's Olympic Gold Medallist Steve Ovett started the race and congratulated the organisers on how well the event had gone.

Our amazing Care Assistant Laura Mackley who juggles part-time at Caer Gwent and Ashmount while taking a Nursing Degree at Brighton University also ran her first marathon and did herself very proud. Laura has been a wonderful fundraiser with over £1013 promised to date!

I am currently in my first year of Nurse Training at Brighton University and I work part-time for two Guild Care homes. Ashmount on Friday nights and I am on the bank for Caer Gwent and work there in the holidays and some Saturday nights.

I have been with Guild Care for 3 years and 8 months. I started at Caer Gwent, full time on days and they put me through my NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care.

I'm quite scared as I have never run a marathon before, though I have participated in some 5km runs. However there’s a big difference between that and a marathon! The training is going really well, even if I do detest running in the cold and rain, it makes you feel much better afterwards!

I chose Guild Care as I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause and where I can see the benefits of my fundraising.
