In difficult financial times and with public services under pressure, there has never been a more important time for carers to know their rights and to access all the financial and practical support they are entitled to.
Friday 3 December is Carers Rights Day, a day of raising national awareness organised by Carers UK. The Carers Support Service, Worthing and District is one of more than 1,000 groups across the UK who are taking part in Worthing and Steyning with carers' information stalls.
One in ten of the population is an unpaid carer for a relative, friend or neighbour and this year's theme is 'Know your Rights.' Many carers are missing out on rights, benefits and services and sometimes it can be helpful to discuss the situation and to find out what you are entitled to. Manager Hari Chhokar said 'We encourage as many carers as possible to come along and find out about their rights. Millions of pounds in benefits and services are unclaimed each year because carers are unaware of what is available to them.'
Information will be available at St Paul's Community Centre, Chapel Road, Worthing between 10am and 1pm on Friday 3 December. You will be able to speak to staff from the Carers Support Service, the Department of Work & Pensions and the Carers' Champions from the JobCentre Plus.
In the afternoon the information point will move to the Steyning Centre, Fletchers Croft, Steyning between 2-4pm. Complementary therapies, free refreshments and a chance to speak to Carers Support Service staff and other carers.
