Chris Hare's new book 'Worthing Under Attack' will be launched on Tuesday 24 May at Methold House, North Street, Worthing - Guild Care's head office and Healthy Living Centre.
The book has been produced with the proceeds of 'Through the Hard Times and the Good' and all new sales of both books will be put towards a new project on reminiscence. Worthing Under Attack will be on sale for £6.50 in all Guild Care shops, reception at the Healthy Living Centre and at Worthing libraries.
The book recounts the fascinating and enthralling account of how ordinary people coped with the impact of the Great Depression in the 1930s and then the dangers of war in the 1940s. Chris Hare said 'This lively account draws heavily on oral history interviews, conducted with people who were living in Worthing at the time. There is a great deal of 'new history' here including material shedding new light on activities in Worthing of the British Union of Fascists and the left-wing Unemployed Workers Movement.' It also includes contemporary accounts of life in Worthing in the 1930s, seen through the ever vigilant columnists.
The launch is followed by two illustrated lectures by Chris Hare at the Sidney Walter Centre, Sussex Road, Worthing on Sunday 29 May at 12 noon and 3pm.
