Guild Care is delighted to announce that following a recent CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspection Haviland House has achieved a ‘Good’ rating.

Haviland House is the only purpose built dementia care home in Worthing devoted to supporting people with dementia. It first opened its doors in January 2015.

Suzanne Millard, Guild Care CEO, said: “This is fantastic news and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and management at Haviland House. We’ve been on a real journey over the last three years since we first opened. Setting up any new care home is difficult, but we had the added challenge of this being the only purpose built home of its kind not just in Worthing but across the south coast. So it has been a learning process for us all and one that we continue to improve on to ensure we provide the best dementia care in the local area and we are the provider of choice.”

Guild Care committed to providing a new dementia care home following the backing of it trustees. It launched its ‘Build a Home to Remember’ campaign in 2013 which helped raise the funds to build Haviland House and the adjoining Bradbury Centre which provides respites services for carers of people with dementia.

Suzanne added: “We have provided dementia community services in Worthing now for many years, but we felt strongly that the town needed a care home that could devote itself entirely to making sure people who have dementia live well, as well as, supporting their loved ones and carers too. Guild Care has always been and will continue to commit to supporting dementia care in Worthing.”

Haviland House has recently adopted the 'butterfly approach' in its home which has been developed by the consultancy Dementia Care Matters. It aims to be the first ‘Butterfly Home’ on the south coast over the next two years.

Manager of Haviland House, Chris Walton-Turner, said: “We all live in the moment – moments matter.  We cannot yet fix dementia as a condition but we can fix our approach. Showing people living with dementia that we know their feelings matter most. ”

Strict routines are no longer the norm at Haviland House and are instead led by the individuals who live there in small households that are suited to their particular stage of dementia. Staff do not wear uniforms and the living environment has been made to look less clinical and much more like a home.

Chris added: “This is a home for life. We are supporting people throughout  their dementia journey. We are all in this together and we want to ensure that Haviland House provides a friendly and homely environment that makes more sense to the people who live here. The butterfly approach is a new way of supporting people living with dementia which we believe makes a real difference not just to their physical health but also to their emotional well-being.”

The sister of one resident said: “It's an excellent home. My sister gets wonderful care. The carers are excellent and it's a loving and safe environment.”
