The residents of our care homes have been delighted to receive flood of supportive messages from the local community.

Following government guidelines, our charity’s three nursing homes in Worthing shut their doors to visitors in March. However, since then, an astonishing amount of supportive messages have been sent via our ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ Facebook group and the post.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me was set up early in our coronavirus response to ensure that residents knew the local community was thinking about them. The group now has close to 300 members, including people from as far away as New Zealand and Australia, and has seen over 2,600 posts, comments and interactions made.

Residents have also been delighted to receive messages of support via the post. For example, Orchards Junior School, which already has a close relationship with our charity’s Fitzalan Howards Centresent a collection of drawings of cherry blossom trees and letters to our Caer Gwent care Home.

Margaret, a Caer Gwent resident, said: “These letters and pictures are just marvellous, what a lovely thing to do.” With the help of staff, many residents are now busy writing back to the schoolchildren to say thank you.

Asked why the schoolchildren sent these messages, Fiona McCarthy, Orchards Junior School’s Deputy Head, said: “We knew how lonely lots of people in care homes would be while they were unable to have their usual visitors. The children who were still attending school wanted to create something to cheer Guild Care’s residents up and to write them letters to show what a strange time it was for everybody, young or old.

“We are delighted to have been able to help keep morale up amongst the residents, even in this small way, and hope that our letters and postcards will become a regular thing.”
