Care Home Histories

The 1980's

Day centres were opened in Ferring in October 1980 and Rustington in December 1980 in addition to the East Worthing Day Centre which had opened in 1978.

Princess Alexandra opened a new recreation room at Methold House in 1983 which was named after Joseph Sayers. Mayor Harold Piggott and Frank Cave are pictured with Princess Alexandra at Ashmount Care HomeJoseph Sayers, the second secretary to the charity, died in 1981 after 22 years of service. He had retired in June 1979. A new recreation room at Methold House, opened by HRH Princess Alexandra in 1983, was named after him.

The charity donated £45,000 to the Clifton Court sheltered housing project so that a day centre could be incorporated. Clifton Court Day Centre opened in 1984.

In 1983 the charity celebrated its 50th anniversary. Looking back over its first five decades, none of its considerable achievements could have been attained without the many years of devoted service given by an ever growing team of volunteers – a group of people on whom Guild Care still depends greatly today.

The new Caer Gwent home, in Downview Road, was opened by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon in 1988.
