People living with dementia and the people who care for them are invited to enjoy a warm welcome and live music at a series of free social event taking place this July at Guild Care’s Haviland House Day Service in Goring-by-Sea.

Music is a highlight of each session, ranging from live singers and dance performances to opportunities for everyone to join in with well-known songs in the dementia choir, ably led by volunteer Ric Gray.

The next social events at Haviland House Day Service are:

  • 11th July: Positive Voices Dementia Choir led by volunteer Ric Gray
  • 19th July: Sunday Social with live music performance
  • 25th July: Saturday Afternoon Tea with ‘Dance Through the Decades’

Louise Jones, social events facilitator at Haviland House Day Service, said, “What makes these sessions special is that carers and the people living with dementia that they care for can enjoy an afternoon out together and feel uplifted. These are also free events, so there’s no need to worry about the cost of an afternoon out, especially one with live music.

“We have a lot of musical acts because it stirs up emotions in loved ones that carers might not have seen for a while. We do get tears, but they’re happy ones. Guests also love to give feedback on the acts, so I know who to book.”

People attending one or more of the social events in July can look forward to a friendly welcome, free refreshments, and the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation who understand, so there’s no stigma.

Louise added, “It is important for both people living with dementia and their carers to have the chance to spend time together. It’s something to look forward to, where you can chat with others in a safe environment. Some of our guests have described it as a ‘lifeline’ for the social aspect, as it might be the only time they go out of the house.”

Anyone considering attending one of the social events for the first time is invited to get in touch and book their places to spend some time out together in a supportive setting.

“If you’re thinking of joining us, we’d love to see you so please come along and give it a try,” said Louise. “There are no strangers here, just friends you haven’t met yet. It’s genuinely a happy, safe, inclusive, and welcoming space. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and a song in your heart!”

All the July social events are open to people living with dementia and their carers and take place from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. While they are free to attend, booking is essential.
